Nonlinear stage of the Benjamin-Feir instability: three-dimensional coherent structures and rogue waves.

چکیده

A specific, genuinely three-dimensional mechanism of rogue wave formation, in a late stage of the modulational instability of a perturbed Stokes deep-water wave, is recognized through numerical experiments. The simulations are based on fully nonlinear equations describing weakly three-dimensional potential flows of an ideal fluid with a free surface in terms of conformal variables. Spontaneous formation of zigzag patterns for wave amplitude is observed in a nonlinear stage of the instability. If initial wave steepness is sufficiently high (ka>0.06), these coherent structures produce rogue waves. The most tall waves appear in turns of the zigzags. For ka<0.06, the structures decay typically without formation of steep waves.

Physical Mechanisms of the Rogue Wave Phenomenon

A review of physical mechanisms of the rogue wave phenomenon is given. The data of marine observations as well as laboratory experiments are briefly discussed. They demonstrate that freak waves may appear in deep and shallow waters. Simple statistical analysis of the rogue wave probability based on the assumption of a Gaussian wave field is reproduced. In the context of water wave theories the ...

Can the Benjamin - Feir instability spawn a rogue wave ?

Recent work by our research group has shown that wave damping can have a surprisingly strong effect on the evolution of waves in deep water, even when the damping is weak. Whether damping is or is not included in a theoretical model can change the outcome in terms of both stability of wave patterns and frequency downshifting. It is conceivable that it might affect the early development of rogue...

The Benjamin-Feir instability and propagation of swell across the Pacific

About 40 years ago, Snodgrass and other oceanographers (1966) tracked ocean swell propagating across the entire Pacific Ocean. At about the same time, several investigators (including Benjamin and Feir) showed that a uniform train of plane waves of finite amplitude on deep water is unstable. Comparing these two results, each of which is highly cited, leads to the following question: in light of...

On Benjamin-Feir instability and evolution of a nonlinear wave with finite-amplitude sidebands

In the past decade it became customary to relate the probability of appearance of extremely steep (the socalled freak, or rogue waves) to the value of the BenjaminFeir Index (BFI) that represents the ratio of wave nonlinearity to the spectral width. This ratio appears naturally in the cubic Schrödinger equation that describes evolution of unidirectional narrow-banded wave field. The notion of t...

On Formation of the Rogue Waves and Holes in Ocean

Two-dimensional nonlinear models are developed to account for abnormal surface ocean waves generation and propagation. These models are based on the KadomtsevPetviashvili equation, the 2D Benjamin-Ono equation and the 2D Gardner equation. Possible mechanisms of the waves formation suggested are the resonant interaction between semi-plane waves or waves with curved fronts or the transverse insta...
